How I Became A Wave – “Fading Out”

how i became a wave fading out

“A soft soundscape that drifts between memory and motion.”

Fresh from a string of prestigious live support slots with Villagers, Gemma Hayes, Ailbhe Reddy and Lisa Hannigan, Cork’s How I Became A Wave returns on Tuesday 30th September with a new single -‘Fading Out’.

The track is accompanied by an official music video starring rising Irish actor Éanna Grogan, whose spellbinding performance mirrors the song’s themes of fragility, memory and release, bringing an added layer of depth and emotion to Carey’s work.

Pat Carey says: “I wrote the song a little while ago, but I find it amazing how songs and work can grow, can change meaning and relevancy, even for the songwriter, over time. While originally inspired by Max Porter’s Grief Is A Thing With Feathers, I think the song is an exploration of the boundaries between owning uncomfortable feelings, and being owned by them, and that sense of fluidity in the in-between stage.

Some songs feel like the soundtrack to a quiet evening — the kind that gently pulls you into your thoughts. “Fading Out” by How I Became A Wave is exactly that kind of track. From the first note, it sets a mood that is both reflective and beautifully melancholic.

The song opens with smooth, layered sounds that immediately create a sense of space, like you’re floating through your own memories. The vocals carry a soft vulnerability, drawing you in without ever forcing attention. There’s a warmth in the way the music flows, but also a subtle tension, a feeling of fading away just like the title suggests.

Lyrically and sonically, the track captures the delicate balance between holding on and letting go. It’s the kind of song that makes you pause, breathe, and really listen — the kind that quietly resonates with moments of solitude or reflection. The production is thoughtful, leaving room for every note and every word to matter.

“Fading Out” isn’t about loud statements or dramatic shifts. Its beauty lies in its subtlety, in the emotions it evokes without trying too hard. It’s a song you can get lost in, a gentle reminder that sometimes music speaks best when it whispers.

For anyone who enjoys songs that are introspective and heartfelt, How I Became A Wave delivers a track that lingers long after it ends, leaving you with that quiet, lingering sense of reflection.
